Paula Findlay holds off Tamara Jewett for impressive Augusta 70.3 win

The fastest bike split trumps the fastest run split as Canadians top the podium in Georgia

The men’s race was supposed to be a duel between two Canadians, only to have a German steal the show. The women’s race was also set to see two Canadian stars vie for the top of the podium, too – this time there were no surprises as Paula Findlay used a dominating bike split (2:17:16) to open up enough time on Tamara Jewett and take the win at Ironman 70.3 Augusta.

American Grace Alexander led the women out of the water, with New Zealand’s Teresa Adam right behind and Findlay just 10 seconds back heading to T1. Jewett came out of the water about a minute behind the leaders, just behind American Jackie Hering.

Findlay, the reigning Canadian time trial champion, quickly took control on the bike, but Adam was never far behind. The two made it to the end of the bike about 4:30 ahead of Hering and Jewett.

Jewett used her impressive run skills to quickly move past Hering and Adam, but Findlay was running fast enough to stay clear. Through 10 km the lead was down to 2:28, but after that Jewett’s charge would stall a bit. Findlay hit the finish line in 4:05:35 after a 1:20:35 half-marathon, enough to hold off Jewett (4:06:53 with a 1:17:38 run split) by 1:20. Hering would round out the podium in 4:14:24.
