It’s the oldest Ironman event on the continental United States, founded in 1999 and considered one of the sport’s classic full-distance events. Ironman Lake Placid was the first Ironman race in North America after Kona and Ironman Canada, and paved the way for all the other American events that have since started up.

The race features a $100,000 prize purse and a strong pro field, along with 60 qualifying slots for the men and women for the Ironman World Championship races in Nice (men) and Kona (women).

Ironman Lake Placid will celebrate 25 years, but will it continue after that?

The race will be streamed on both Ironman Now on Facebook Watch and Ironman Now on YouTube beginning at 10 AM EST. Since Lake Placid is set in the middle of the Adirondack mountains with very little cellular coverage, it isn’t possible to have decent video coverage for much of the bike course.

“Our broadcast team plans to pre-record the start of the race, and approximately the first 25 minutes of the FULGAZ bike course,” according to a statement from Ironman. “We will begin to stream the pre-recorded coverage at 10:00 a.m. ET. Based on our broadcast team’s timing estimates the professional athletes will be coming out of the final cellular dark zone on the bike course at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET. At that time, the broadcast will include the live coverage of the completion of the bike course and the remainder of the race. The broadcast will remain live through the conclusion of the race and podium presentations, including a post-race recap.”

Beals back to defend title

Canadian Cody Beals is back as the reigning champion, but will have his work cut out for him to take a second straight title with the likes of Great Britain’s two-time Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee and his countryman Joe Skipper in the field.

American Jodie Robertson is the highest ranked woman in the field – her competition could come from a trio of Canadians including Rach McBride, Jen Annett and Angela Naeth, while Japan’s Ai Ueda continues her move to long-distance after a long career in draft-legal racing.

Here’s a list of the pro athletes competing on Sunday.
