Remember when James Lawrence surprised everyone with a 101st Iron-distance effort after setting the record with 100 efforts in a row? That seems to have inspired British adventurer Sean Conway, who set the new record yesterday with his 102nd and is in the process of finishing up a 103rd effort.

Sean Conway finishes his 101st full-distance triathlon: dedicated to James Lawrence

“I thought of potentially doing 100 back in 2018, but put it aside to get married to my incredible wife, and start a family,” Conway said yesterday after finishing the 102nd consecutive 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and 42.2 km run. “Then last year, I failed at Iron102, and only made it to day 7.  I started to think I wasn’t cut out for this, then once I’d recovered, I believed I could, and just had to have another crack at it.”

“This has been by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Conway continued. “It’ll be hard to top this. A huge thanks to James Lawrence for setting such a high bar for me.”

Born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa and now living in Wales, Conway adds this record to a number of impressive endurance achievements. Prior to his century-plus full-distance endeavour, he cycled around the world and swam the length of Great Britain.  He also holds the record for cycling across Europe (24 days, 18 hours and 39 minutes), completed a 4,200 mile triathlon around the coast of Great Britain (“the toughest 85 days of my life as I attempted the entire feat completely self supported”), climbed Kilimanjaro in a penguin suit and has accomplished many other impressive feats since 2011.

How do you top it? 103

“Didn’t think I was going to stop, did you?” Conway said in an Instagram post from the pool this morning. “Up until yesterday I had to do this, now I want to see if I can cope.”

Conway admitted to being slightly hungover today, but is on track to get day 103 finished.

To date he’s raised 85,000 pounds for for the True Venture Foundation which “exists to inspire and support children and young athletes by improving access to positive opportunities through sport so they can connect with and reach their potential.”
