5 Reasons triathlon couples work
Life is much easier when your partner gets it
Could there be a better day than February 14 to celebrate your triathlon partner? (For those of you too deep into your base training right now, it’s Valentine’s Day. You might want to cut tonight’s workout short and splurge on some flowers and or some chocolate!)
Face it, us triathletes are hard to live with, which is why we need to celebrate when somehow we find someone to love who shares the same passion. Last year we offered up a list of things only a fellow triathlete would put up with.
This year we offer some reasons to be truly thankful your partner is a multisport athlete, too!
You can’t remember the last time you slept in
This is going to sound outlandish, but believe it or not, there are people who aren’t at the pool, out for a run or on the bike first thing Saturday and Sunday mornings. Good thing it’s not one of you two.
You understand the need for a pre- or post-meal snack
Once again, believe it or not, there are people out there who get upset with their partners when they eat before they go out for dinner, or rush back into the house to get more food after they come back. Not so for triathlon couples. The only problem is they might be after the same food.
Vacation is another word for training camp
Remember all those times you went somewhere with your family or a previous partner and they got so upset that you were bringing your bike, or that you spent so much of the time at that resort training? Isn’t it wonderful when the only debate is about whose bike case the pump is going into?
They love to talk about training … and racing … and equipment
You know those times when you feel like you’re having a great conversation with an old friend or family member about your nutrition issues during the bike and run at Ironman (fill in the name) and how you spent the entire summer dealing in a new gel and liquid strategy to deal with that ? And for some reason they weren’t enthralled? Isn’t it great to be able to dive deep into those issues with someone who gets it?
There are two of you trying to get to Kona, Nice or another world championship
This isn’t a competition! It’s teamwork. Their success is your success. Everyone is going to refer to you as the super-fit couple who head off to that race in Hawaii (or France).
