How’s this for a blockbuster late addition to this weekend’s field at the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) Canadian Open? Two-time Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee is on a plane right now on his way to Edmonton to take on the stacked field that includes Kristian Blummenfelt, Gustav Iden and Lionel Sanders.

Brownlee has had a tough 2022 so far – he struggled over the closing kilometres of Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, had to pull out of the Ironman World Championship St. George at the last minute due to illness. He then had to pull out of the the Sub7 attempt against Blummenfelt because of a stress response in his hip. He would go on to swim with his replacement Joe Skipper at the Sub7 Project, then work as part of the commentary team for the event.
