Review: Skratch Labs – Sport Hydration Drink Mix

You prioritize performance, why would you expect anything different from your nutrition?

Replenishing lost calories, electrolytes and fluids is essential for all triathletes, especially those pushing the endurance barrier. Skratch Labs philosophy is that if you aim to consume a majority of your calories from solids and leave the fluids for replenishing electrolytes, gastrointestinal issues when competing will be minimized. The Skratch Labs – Anytime Energy Bar is high in caloric content, while the Skratch Labs – Sport Hydration Drink Mix has a low caloric hit, but lots of electrolytes.

With two times the electrolytes and nearly half the sugar of the conventional sports drink, this hydration mix prioritizes performance. The electrolytes help replenish the sweat you pour out on the trainer, without messing with your gut. With just 80 calories per serving and under 20g of sugar, I had no gastrointestinal issues drinking the Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix on the bike, followed by a hard tempo 10K brick session.

While most sport drink brands, like Gatorade or Powerade, are packed with sugar and overly flavourful, the Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix hits the spot with four different flavours – orange, lemon & lime, passion fruit and strawberry. And don’t be afraid of mixing it up. I am a true lemon & lime fan, staying away from anything too fruity. So, when I drew the strawberry and passion fruit mixes, I was nervous. But lo and behold, it wasn’t bad. Actually, it was really good.

With the low caloric density, I ended up using the Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix before and during all three disciplines. I took small swigs of the mix during my long pool sessions and didn’t experience any stitches in my abdomen. On the bike, I made sure to put the mix in all of my bottles and never tired of the taste. Once I finished my ride, I did a hard 10K tempo run. Despite drinking lots, I experienced no GI issues. On my longer runs, I stored a bottle of Skratch Labs hydration mix on the route. Both the bottle storage and the hydration plan worked like a charm. With little sips every 15 minutes, I stayed topped up and experienced no GI issues.

The Skratch Labs Hydration Mix is a verified non-GMO sports drink that is gluten free, dairy free, vegan and kosher.
