Muskoka: “The Beast of the North” tamed

Jewett and McWilliams cross the line first in Huntsville

This past weekend, a thousand age group triathletes took on IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka in Huntsville, Ontario. The weather could not have been better. With calm waters, cool morning temperatures and tonnes of community support, the race went off without a hitch.

The triathletes started the day with a 1.9km swim in Fairy Lake. On the bike, the athletes completed the out and back 90km course to Dorset. The course had great views of Lake of Bays, and there was great support on the route. Jumping off the bike and onto the run, the crowd lifted the spirits of those making there way through the last 21.1 kilometres. The fans on the two-loop course gave the age groupers the lift they needed to finish. At the finish, the triathletes were congratulated by hundreds of volunteers, family and friends.

Once again, the IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka staff, the town of Huntsville, volunteers and sponsors put on a great event.

The overall men’s winner was Matt McWilliams (USA), finishing in a time of 4:05:36. He was joined on the podium by Nick Cosman of Kingston, Ontario and Marco Corti (ITA).

The women’s overall winner was Tamara Jewett of Toronto, Ontario, finishing in a time of 4:20:45. She was joined on the podium by Jennifer Zenker (AUS) and Erin Snelgrove of Jordan, Ontario.
