Jan Frodeno: The golden race of my career

Jan Frodeno

Two years ago he walked most of the marathon. Last year Jan Frodeno had to sit on the sidelines and watch his countryman Patrick Lange become the first man to go under eight hours here on the Big Island in picture perfect race conditions.

The painful memories of those last two races in Kona were quickly erased yesterday as Jan Frodeno, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, not only dominated the best athletes in our sport, he set a new course record on a day many didn’t think that would be possible. Second out of the water with a 47:31, he was first off the bike after riding 4:16:03 in challenging wind conditions, then followed that up with a 2:42:43 marathon, the days fastest, to set a new course record here in Kona of 7:51:13.

And the best news? As you’ll see in this post-race video, he’s coming back for more.
