Day two results from Pontevedra

On April 30th, the 2019 ITU World Multisport Championship continued from Pontevedra, Spain with the cross triathlon. Spain’s Ruben Ruzafa is a four-time world champion and was one of the favourites heading into Tuesday’s race. Francisco Serrano (MEX), the 2017 world champion, was also expected to challenge for the world title in Pontevedra. On the women’s side, Lesley Paterson (GBR) hoped to defend her 2018 world title from Fyn, Denmark.

In the men’s elite race, Arthur Forissier (FRA) took the world title. He was followed by Ruzafa and Lukas Kocar (CZE). On the women’s side, Eleonora Peroncini (ITA) finished ahead of Jacqueline Slack (GBR) and Nicole Walters (GBR).

Canada’s medal hopeful in the men’s race, Karsten Madsen, was forced to withdraw from the race. In a quick update on Instagram, Madsen explained how he suffered from Atrial Fibrillation – a known problem since 2009. “Midway through the bike, I suffered from Atrial Fibrillation. I believe I was going in and out of rhythm throughout the bike. Off the bike, I collapsed due to the loss of blood pressure. My heart rate is back to normal and I’m safe,” wrote Madsen. “At this time, racing will be paused. It’s time for me to sort this problem out. My intentions are to race again, and soon.”
