The women put on a show at WTCS Montreal – Photo Gallery #1

A look back at the day of racing in words and pictures

Triathlon fans had to settle with just one day of elite racing in Montreal as the World Triathlon Championship Series Mixed Relay was cancelled due to the severe smoke that has engulfed Montreal due to the forest fires in the region.

Triathlon Magazine was on hand to cover the exciting day of racing yesterday, though – we recap the women’s race in pictures by editor Kevin Mackinnon.

Just two days after taking fourth at the USA National Time Trial Championships, Taylor Knibb was all smiles as she prepared to start the race – even though she knew she had a 10 second penalty to serve in T1 for being late for the technical meeting. (She was late because of the cycling race!)
Lining up against the world’s best can be a bit nerve wracking.
The women were off first …
… diving into the cold waters of the St. Lawrence.
Two laps into the bike Knibb made her move, breaking clear of the rest of the field with countrywoman Summer Rappaport in tow.
Canadian Dominika Jamnicky worked hard to get the second chase group together with the first. Her aggressive cycling helped her to a 17th-place finish.
Knibb and Rappaport would open up a lead of over 30 seconds on the group at one point, but in the end only had a few seconds lead into T2.
Rappaport would surge out of T2 with a slight lead …
… But it wasn’t long before the speedy runners in the field were making inroads on her lead.
Then there were three. Great Britain’s Beth Potter surges to the front during the second of two laps of the 5 km run course, with Summer Rappaport and Leonie Periault trying to mark the move.
In the end there was no stopping Potter. The 2016 track and field Olympian knew exactly what she needed to do to take the win.
With her best WTCS performance since returning from maternity leave, American Katie Zaferes would take fifth, one spot ahead of Knibb.
