For a while it seemed as though the challenges of the famed Norseman Xtreme Triathlon weren’t going to be part of this year’s race as athletes enjoyed sunshine and seemingly great conditions through the early part of the race. That all changed, though, as a storm arrived on Mt. Gausta, forcing organizers to switch from the normal mountain-top finish for the first 160 competitors and have everyone head to the “white” finish traditionally used for those who don’t make the cut off.

The biggest name in the race this year was Germany’s Sebastian Kienle, who is finishing up his two-year retirement celebration by doing a number of “bucket-list” races. The German 70.3 and Ironman world champ would end up taking second in today’s race behind Norway’s Jon Breivold, the defending champion.

Kienle would lead out of the water, but Breivold would catch him on the challenging bike course, hitting T2 with a six minute lead. The Norwegian would pad his lead during the marathon, finishing the race in 9:09:57, with Kienle coming across the line in 9:34:16. Rounding out the podium was Norway’s Allan Hovda, who completed his 10th Norseman event today.

Great Britain’s Flora Colledge would take the women’s win in 11:20:10 – a welcome step up the podium after having taken second twice at this event. Behind her were Norway’s Emilie Bergheim  (11:31:44) and Kaja Bergwitz-Larsen (11:36:43).
