It’s been quite a few days for Italy’s Franco Pesavento – just a couple of days after winning the inaugural World Triathlon Winter Duathlon Championships Andorra, he came back to take the triathlon title, too. For the women, Russian Triathlon Federation athlete Daria Rogozina chose to skip the duathlon worlds, which turned out to be a good move as she regained the title she won in 2020 with a wire to wire win.

The race included a 4 km run, a 6.4 km mountain bike and a 6.2 km cross country ski, all done twice. Rogozina, who won the title in 2020 and was third last year, was four seconds ahead of Italy’s Sandra Mairhofer at the end of the first 4 km run and steadily pulled clear of the rest of the field to take the title in 2:03:59. Mairhofer would hang on for second in 2:07:16, with Norway’s Elisabeth Sveum making up some ground on the Italian towards the end of the race to finish third in 2:07:42.

Romania’s Felix Duchampt led the men through the first run in 14:06, with Pesavento just three seconds back starting the first bike, but the Italian quickly pulled clear of the Romanian, only to have the Czech Republic’s Marek Rauchfuss bike into the mix. The two were well matched on skis, but Pesavento was the faster runner and Rauchfuss the faster cyclist – Pesavento would open up a gap of about 75 seconds after the second run, only to lose all that and more on the final bike. A quick transition and a 20-second-faster final ski leg got the Italian to the line in 1:48:10, 14-seconds ahead of Rauchfuss (1:48:24). The Russian Triathlon Federation’s Evgeni Uliashev rounded out the podium (1:50:49).

Pesavento and Medvedeva take winter duathlon worlds

On Thursday Pesavento also took the inaugural World Triathlon Winter Duathlon World Championships, running away from the field and never looking back as he took the title over Romania’s Viorel Palici and Norway’s Hans Christian Tungsvik. The Russian Triathlon Federation’s Anna Medvedeva took the women’s title in similar fashion, running clear of the rest of the women and staying ahead through the race that included a 4 km run and a 6 km ski done three times.
