Things to do

When it comes to casing out some of the opportunities within the area your first stop should be Townsville’s tourism website. This incredibly detailed site can help you with everything from figuring out what the weather is likely to be, how to get there, along with detailed info on activities sure to suit pretty much anyone.  Whether you’re looking to do some diving in and around the Great Barrier Reef or at one of the local shipwrecks, spend some time hiking through the forests, learning about the local wildlife, enjoying some of the many watersport activities or touring through some of the historical sites, you’ll no-doubt wish you’d had more time to enjoy your time in the area.

Magnetic Island

During our press trip we took the short ferry ride over to Magnetic Island to take in the spectacular scenery and beaches on the island. It’s a “must-do” part of your trip to Townsville in order to enjoy some of the great hiking and watersports activities including fishing, snorkelling and diving, but also because of all the wildlife you’ll be able to see including Koala.

Aquascene offers tours to Magnetic Island that will help you enjoy all that wildlife, treat you to time at secluded beaches and bays, or snorkel at coral reefs.

Dives

There are a number of companies that can provide you with an excellent dive or snorkelling experience at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Magnetic Island or at the popular SS Youngala Wreck, including Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive.

Rainforest and Outback Activities

Whether you want to hike for a day or camp out for a night or two, there are a number of options to check out the spectacular forest and waterfalls in the area, including Wallaman Falls, “the highest permanent single drop waterfall in the country.

You can also do a number of tours to take in the “outback” including a trip to Charters Towers and its rich gold-rush history or check out the Texas Longhorns on a horse-drawn wagon ride or Safari.

Townsville time

While you’ll definitely want to explore some of those options, you should also take a bit of time to check out some of the action in Townsville. The city centre has been “transformed into a Street Art haven,” and there are lots of interesting restaurants to keep you busy during your stay. Those looking for some museum time can take in the Maritime Museum of Townsville or the Museum of Tropical Queensland.

Hopefully the North Queensland Cowboys will be playing a National Rugby League (NRL) game during the championships – a trip to the 25,000 set Queensland Country Bank Stadium is sure to provide some lasting memories, too.

Personalize your trip

Yeah, we know we mentioned this earlier, but in case you forgot, Townsville Enterprise runs an incredibly detailed website that is a great start when it comes to coming up with the best way to keep yourself and your friends and family entertained during the trip. You can check out the site here.
