Canadians earn multiple podiums at Americas Triathlon Championships Veracruz

American John Reed tops the men's podium, with Mexico's Rosa Tapia Vidal out sprinting American Gina Sereno in the women's race

It was a big day for Canada at the Americas Triathlon Championships Veracruz on Saturday.

Martin Sobey and Brock Hoel bookended the podium (picture above) with their second- and third-place finishes behind American John Reed in the men’s elite race. In the U23 race Hoel was joined by countryman Josiah Ney to once again bookend Reed on the podium.

Reed (1:43:49) finished almost a minute ahead of Sobey (1:44:39), with Hoel finishing just a second later (1:44:40). Also finishing in the top 10 were Aiden Longcroft Harris (7th, 1:45:18) and Chris Gregor (1oth, 1:46:26).

In the  elite women’s race, Mexico’s Rosa Tapia Vidal (1:59:35) took the sprint over American Gina Sereno (1:59:38), with Canadian Emy Legault rounding out the podium in 2:00:16. Legault’s countrywoman Dominika Jamnicky struggled in the heat and would finish sixth (2:01:16).

In the U23 women’s race, Mexico’s Anahi Alvarez Corral (2:00:38) and Mercedes Romero Orozco (2:02:11) took the top two spots, with Canadian Sophia Howell (2:03:38) rounding out the podium. Other top-10 Canadian finishers included Maira Carreau (6th, 2:05:21) and Anja Krueger (9th, 2:06:59).
