Arizona State’s domination of the Women’s Collegiate Triathlon National Championship continued this year with the team’s seventh-straight national title, while Maira Carreau from La Prairie, Quebec, a freshman from the University of Denver, took the individual Division I title. The championship, contested over the sprint distance, was hosted for the sixth straight year by Tempe, the site of Ironman Arizona, and Arizona State University. The team titles were decided by the total points of the first five athletes from each team.

Division I

With three athletes in the top five there was no stopping the Arizona State Sun Devils, coached by Canadian Cliff English, who was named Division I coach of the year. Carreau, a freshman, took the win after coming out of the water in 14th place, then riding in the lead pack on the bike before using the day’s third-fastest run to cross the line in 1:03:22. That put Carreau 10-seconds ahead of Arizona State’s Naomi Ruff (1:03:32), who is from West Chicago, with her teammate, South Africa’s Amber Schlebusch, rounding out the podium in 1:03:49. Arizona State beat Queens University of Charlotte and the University of Chicago for the team title.
