British Ironman champion Joe Skipper (pictured above crossing the line in fifth at last year’s Ironman World Championship) posted some scary news on his social media – he’s done racing for the year thanks to a “health issue” that left him “unable to talk” and affected his memory. Skipper was planning on finishing off his 2023 season with another Ironman event, either Ironman Florida, which is this weekend, or Ironman Cozumel later in the month.

Ironman New Zealand champ Joe Skipper criticized for 325 km ride

“On Sunday, while I was getting ready to head out for a ride, I was trying to talk to a friend when I found myself unable to talk,” Skipper said. “I knew what I wanted to say, but was unable to get it out. My memory also went …”

Skipper went to the hospital and had a CT scan among other tests and was given the “all clear to leave.” Skipper said in his post that he has “one more test to do, but it is looking good – all be it very worrying at the time.”

Skipper has been directed by his doctors to rest for a few days.

Ironman champion Joe Skipper “lucky to walk away” from crash

“So, I’ll be having a bit of time off, chilling out with the family and then will build up to next year starting off with Oceanside and Ironman Texas and have a crack at the Ironman Pro Series,” he said. “I know it sounds very cliche guys, but make sure you really do live your best life as you never know what’s around the corner.”

Like many of the athletes who commented on Skipper’s post, we wish him a speedy recovery.
