Australia’s Cam Wurf has long been among triathlon’s most popular pros because of his impressive versatility – he’s finished as high as fifth in Kona and won a number of Ironman events while also representing the Ineos Grenadiers pro cycling team.

Wurf struggled to an 11th-place finish in Kona last year, learning after he returned home from the Big Island that he had COVID on race day. This year, in the hunt for an Ironman World Championship qualifying slot, Wurf competed at Ironman South Africa, finishing fifth, one spot away from an automatic qualifying slot. No slots rolled down.

He followed that up with a third-place finish at Ironman Lanzarote, and would have received a roll down slot for Nice if he’d been at the ceremony after winner Arthur Horseau was late and missed his spot.

It was third-time lucky for Wurf at this weekend’s Ironman Austria race, where he finished second to Mathias Petersen.

“Qualifying for Ironman World Championships has been a big challenge for me this year,” Wurf wrote in an Instagram post. “I failed in both South Africa and Lanzarote and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I’d had nightmares about not making the grade. Fortunately today I managed to do enough to earn my start position in Nice on September 10?. I’ve now got 3 months to sharpen the ?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️tools & get ready to face the best of the best in Ironman Triathlon. I’m feeling pretty chippa I must say?!”

Wurf used his signature biking skills to post the fastest bike split in Klagenfurt on the weekend, riding almost five minutes faster than Petersen, but would end up running over 11 minutes slower than the Dane.
