This year’s Challenge Laguna Phuket will see world champions compete for part of the race’s 25,000 Euro prize purse. Following the success of its inaugural event in 2013, the multi-event weeklong “Challenge Laguna Phuket Tri-Fest” has already kicked off with the 21st Laguna Phuket Triathlon taking place last weekend and the flagship Challenge Laguna Phuket event taking place on November 30.

The unique distance of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon, made up of a 1.8km swim, 55km bike, and 12km run, and the half distance race of Challenge Laguna Phuket featuring 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21km run, have attracted entries from leading pros as well as age groupers worldwide with 1,500 athletes joining the race this year. Last weekend saw a tie on the men’s side between Italy’s Massimo Cigana and Alberto Casadei  in 2:33:57 under extremely hot conditions. The women’s race was won by Australia’s Parys Edwards.

On Sunday, last year’s champion Rasmus Petraeus of Denmark will try to defend his title. He will face strong challenges from a field that will include LPT’s triple champion Massimo Cigana (ITA) and Luke McKenzie (AUS). On the women’s side defending champ Melissa Hauschildt, Radka Vodickova and Belinda Granger are sure to battle it out for the top spot.
