When brothers Kirk and Kris Tobias founded the Ride For Karen, in honour of their mother who lost a battle with cancer, they had no idea of the impact they would make. Established thirteen years ago, the annual cycling event has raised more than $2 million to support children living with cancer. Ride for Karen is a completely volunteer-run initiative whereby 100 per cent of the funds raised are donated to charity.
The effort, dedication and passion of the Tobias brothers has created a powerful reciprocity in the community with countless people giving of their time and support to the cause. The Trek Toronto Bicycle store, along with their Aurora and Barrie locations have sponsored the event for the last eight years, providing mechanical support, gear and whole lot of enthusiasm. “We love this event because it’s honest and genuine–with almost no budget Kris and Kirk give everything they raise to children living with cancer,” said Trek Toronto Store owner Barry Near.
From 2004 through 2013, the proceeds from the ride went to Camp Quality, Camp Oochigeas and Camp Trillium, helping kids with cancer experience the joys and normalcy of summer camp.
This year’s ride takes place on Sunday, September 7 starting from the Markham Fairgrounds in Markham, Ont. The fully-supported cycling event offers 25km, 100km and 160km courses as well as a Kids Fun Ride. The course is on a popular training route among local triathletes just north of Toronto, and every year many triathletes take part in the ride. For more info visit: www.rideforkaren.com
