Andrew Starykowicz set the new all-time best Ironman bike split of 4:02:17 (breaking his old mark of 4:04:39) but that was still not enough for the American defend his title at the 15th Ironman Florida.
Spain’s Victor Del Corral trailed Starykowicz by 18 minutes and 39 seconds at the start of the run but he threw down what has to be one of the most spectacular marathons and comebacks in Ironman history. He caught Starykowicz at the 24.5 mile mark and finished with a 2:37:29 marathon to claim the overall victory in 7:53:12 – a new course record.
Yvonne Van Vlerken (NLD) defended her title and managed to set a new course best of her own. After a 1:00:14 swim that put her down 5 minutes to the leaders, she rode 4:35:49 to grab the lead late, and she then proceeded to run a 3:01:55 marathon to finish close to 9 minutes faster than last year – 8:43:07. Reigning Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae finished in 9:48:07 to validate her spot for Kona 2014 – just ahead of her upcoming marriage to fellow triathlete Tim O’Donnell. Toronto’s Cindy Lewis finished in 9:30:29 to claim 19th in the pro’s women’s category and was the fastest Canadian woman on the day.
