Canada’s Paula Findlay represented the triathlon world in style today at the UCI World Championship Individual Time Trial, finishing 25th. The two-time Canadian national time trial champion was competing in her first cycling world championship event.

Paula Findlay takes National Time Trial Championship for second straight year

Findlay, who took second at last year’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship event in St. George, is no stranger to big events. She competed at the 2012 Olympics, took the bronze medal at the 20019 U23 world championship and remains the only Canadian to have won multiple World Triathlon Series (now the World Triathlon Championship Series) races – she won five in 2010 and 2011, making her one of the favourites for the Olympics in London before injury slowed her and she would struggle to just reach the finish line.

Findlay now adds another world championship appearance to her impressive resume, this time in another sport. In just her third time trial race, she finished 25th, 3:41 behind gold medalist Chloe Dygert from the United States. (Full results are below.)

According to a post on Instagram, she was initially disappointed with her finish “although I had no idea what to expect.”

“I will say that it was one of my most favorite sporting experiences ever,” she continued. “From the professional mechanics, team car, radio, crazy crowds, and riding at the edge of my physical limit for 36km, I truly loved all of it. I held my best power ever over the distance, but was bleeding so much time in corners and technical sections. For my 3rd TT ever, I can definitely say that I learned a ton, and genuinely hope I can do more, because I think my improvement curve could be good with some specific position and technical work. These women are very, very good and it was cool to see and learn from them up close.”

The race comes just five days after Findlay took third at the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) US Open, one of the most competitive middle-distance races of the year. Next up for the Edmonton native will be the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Lahti, Finland.
