Quebec’s Mathis Beaulieu was part of a three-way race for the win at today’s World Triathlon Junior Championships in Hamburg, taking the bronze medal behind Portugal’s Joao Nuno Batista and France’s Nils Serre Gehri.

Beaulieu was part of the chase pack on the bike, hitting T2 in good position and seemingly ready to run to the front of the race through the first 2.5 km. The final half of the run turned out to be a strategic match up between the three medalists, with Batista making the decisive move just before the blue carpet, with Serre taking the sprint over Beaulieu.

2022 Canadian Junior Triathletes of the Year

Ilona Hadhoum gets her win

A strong swimmer, France’s Ilona Hadhoum was disappointed last year in Montreal when the junior worlds was switched to a duathlon. This year she blasted clear in the water, hitting T1 with a 25-second lead, setting up a short-lived breakaway before a large group managed to get together over the final stages of the bike.

Once on the run, though, Hadhoum blasted clear of the rest of the field, opening a 10-second lead through the first loop of the run, and remaining clear through the finish. Mexico’s Jimena Renata De La Pena Schott ran her way to second, with Hadhoum’s countrywoman Manon Laporte rounding out the podium.

Cara Macdonald was the top Canadian, she finished 12th.
