The man who was to be the highlight of Ironman 70.3 Oceanside this weekend just announced that he won’t be competing at the race this weekend due to a virus.

“On the finishing straight, so to speak, and have been struck down by the ‘flu,’” Frodeno wrote on Instagram. “@ironmantri Oceanside is off. Next stop the @professionaltriathletesorg race in Ibiza. Good luck to all those racing in Cali. Sad to miss it.”

“It’s been another one of those weeks,” Frodeno said in a video. “My doctors just told me that I’ve come up with a virus in my bloodwork … so the doctor has not given me the green light to race.”

Frodeno said that he’s going to rest up and try to “maintain the actually decent form I’ve developed in the last few months” and gear up for the next race on his schedule, the PTO European Open in Ibiza.

Today’s announcement means that two of the big names signed up for Saturday’s race have now been forced to pull out due to illness – on Monday we reported that Lionel Sanders was also skipping the event which is considered the “season-opener” here in North America.
