ITU Duathlon World Championships Get Underway in Pontevedra

Team Canada - Duathlon World Championships 2012 (Nancy, France)

Pontevedra Spain plays host to the ITU Duathlon World Championships this weekend as the top multisport duathletes compete over the 10km run, 40km bike and 5km run course. There is $90,000 USD on the line for the elites in both the individual and mixed relay. Last year’s world championship was held in Ottawa, Ont.

On the women’s side Susanne Svendsen (DEN) is ranked first, but is sure to feel the pressure of France’s Sandra Levenez and Katie Hewison (GBR). In the men’s race Rob Woestenborghs (BEL) is the one to beat having claimed both the long and short distance races last year. Hometown favourite Emilio Martin won the race in 2012, but  Woestenborghs outrode him and he was unable to defend his title.

In addition to the elites, Pontevedra will welcome age group, paraduathlon, junior and U23 competitors.
