Europe Triathlon puts hold on PTO European Championship announcement

No "European Championships" should be awarded by PTO at this stage

We reported earlier this week that the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) will be hosting its European Open again in Ibiza next year on Sept. 28 and 29, just one week after the Ironman World Championship in Nice (see link below). The event was announced as the European Championship for both pros and age groupers, but according to Europe Triathlon, that’s not entirely the case.

It’s on. PTO schedules European Open one week after Ironman World Championship Nice

In August the PTO and World Triathlon announced the two organizations would be joining forces for a long-distance world championship tour. That doesn’t mean that the PTO will be putting on regional championships, though – according to Europe Triathlon the championship will be part of a “multisport festival,” not in Ibiza.

PTO and World Triathlon partner on long distance World Championship Tour

According to Endurance.Biz,

‘World Triathlon would like to express that, as was mentioned last August in the agreement signed with the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO), we have agreed to launch the official World Championship Tour of long-distance triathlon that will award the World Champion title.

‘In regards to the Continental Championships, the negotiations are still to be finalized and we hope to reach an agreement in the coming weeks; therefore no European Championship title should be awarded by PTO at this stage. We are in communication with the PTO to clarify this.’

“We are happy to have new collaborations with professional partners like PTO, but, at present, for the 2024 season, our European Championship for Elite and AG on middle distance will be staged in the Multisport Festival that will take place in June 2024,” said Renato Bertrandi, President of Europe Triathlon. “The location and date of the middle distance European Championships (as well as the other European Championships) will be announced next week.”

We’ve reached out to PTO and World Triathlon for comment on this and will update this story with any additional information.
