Challenge Family returns to US with new event in New Jersey
Olympic-distance race in New Jersey joins Challenge Family series
Photo by: Challenge FamilyAfter the announcement of Challenge Cap Quebec this fall, Challenge Family continues its return to North America with the announcement of another addition – the Challenge New Jersey State Triathlon on the same weekend – July 20 to 21, 2024.
After a number of failed attempts to gain a foothold in North America, Challenge appears to have partnered with some strategic players this time around. The Quebec City event is being organized by former Ironman Mont-Tremblant race director Dominique Piche, while this new event in New Jersey is part of CGI Racing’s portfolio of events, which also includes the Love Run Philadelphia Half Marathon and the NJ Half Marathon – Unite NJ at Rutgers University.
The new race will be one of the few short-course races on the Challenge Family series, joining Barcelona and Istanbul.

Formerly the New Jersey State Triathlon, the race is based in Merced Country Park, which serves as the base for the US Olympic Rowing Team. The race has previously sold out with 3,500 athletes. The swim takes place in Mercer Lake, followed by a bike on “local and closed/traffic-free county roads around the perimeter of the park. The run is in the park on “paved trails running along the banks of the lake and through shaded wood areas.”
The race will offer three qualifying slots for the Championship, Challenge Family’s “qualification-only flagship event held at the x-bionic sphere in Samorin, Slovakia.”
