Pro triathlete Sofie Goos stabbed on training run in Antwerp

Yesterday, Belgian pro triathlete Sofie Goos was stabbed in the back by a stranger while out on a training run in a park in Antwerp. Goos races for the BMC-Etixx Pro Triathlon Team and regularly trains in the area. An announcement on the team’s Facebook page says she was stabbed with a knife in the kidney and lost a lot of blood, but even tried to chase after the perpetrator before realizing what had happened. The act was unprovoked.

Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in Antwerp in association with the attack. He has been charged with attempted murder, according to Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.

The team has been releasing updates about Goos’s condition over social media. She is now in the intensive care unit at ZNA Stuivenberg Hospital and is in stable condition.

“This morning the doctors, in close contact with our team doctor, were able to provide an update about the status of Sofie Goos,” reads a post from this morning. “We can confirm that Sofie has been injured on the right kidney… She is continuesly monitored at the intensive care unit. Based on the ungoing monitoring, the doctors will evaluate if additional procedures are needed. At this moment in time it is impossible to provide any indication about the time of the recovery process.”

Triathletes around the world have expressed their shock over the incident and wished the athlete a fast recovery.
