Wurtele wins Ironman Lake Placid

Tollakson takes the men's title.

Today in Lake Placid, New York, Canada’s Heather Wurtele and American TJ Tollakson won the 13th Ironman Lake Placid.

Wurtele, led the swim (57:14), rode the top bike split of 5:08:13 (despite losing the lead for less than a mile), then ran the top marathon of 3:08:24 to take the win in 9:19:03. In the process, she also set the new course record. Belgium’s Tine Deckers finished second (9:34:41), and American Tyler Stewart got third (9:38:09). Toronto’s Suzanne Zelazo placed sixth among the professional women (10:21:08) in her Ironman debut, while North Vancouver’s Miranda Alldritt was eighth (10:46:46), and Quebec’s Marie Danais ninth (10:48:26).

Tollakson, exited the water in second place but quickly took the lead during the bike and kept it for good. Any pursuit was for naught, as Tollakson rode the top split of 4:33:33 (just 10 seconds in arrears of Steve Larsen’s record set in 2001), and added a 2:56:46 marathon to take the win in relative ease (8:25:15). Fellow American Ben Hoffman, put up a good defence of his title but came in second (8:33:29). Australian Jason Shortis, a five time Ironman Champion, ran the best marathon of 2:50:24 to finish third (8:47:18). Victoria’s Mike Neill moved up a few spots during the run take seventh (9:13:03). Oakville’s Tyler Lord finished as the 11th professional male (10:09:48), and Ottawa’s Ryan Cain 15th (10:50:16).
