Ribeiro and Monforte earn Ultraman World Titles

Canada's O'Keeffe takes third, and McQuair fourth.

Alexandre Ribeiro of Brazil and Amber Monforte of the USA took home the 2012 Ultraman World titles.

Ribeiro, 47, won his sixth Ultraman World title (2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011) in dominating style, winning by close to one hour. Ribeiro led after day one (10 km swim and 145 km bike) where he swam 3:13:56 and biked 5:14:57, he led again after day two (276 km bike) with a 7:36:55 bike, and he finished off with a 6:45 24 double marathon to finish with a time of 22:51:12. Ottawa’s Tony O’Keeffe, 51, finished in 25:56:29 and claimed third spot and was fourth overall.

Monforte, 37, retained her Ultraman World crown for the third year in a row. She trailed Kathy Walker (USA) by a few minutes after day one (9:04:23 vs 9:07:36), but on day two her 8:09:27 ride created a gap of 34 minutes between her and Winkler. Winkler ran a faster double marathon (8:06:21) but Monforte took advantage of her lead and ran 8:12:06 to take the women’s victory in 25:29:09 and finish third overall. Winkler finished second in 25:57:56. Penticton’s Tracey McQuair, 37, finished fourth with a completion time of 28:19:31.
