As in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010, Nanjing 2014 will feature individual sprint distance triathlons for 32 women and 32 men, as well as a mixed relay competition with continental teams.  The maximum for each National Olympic Committee (NOC) will be one woman and one man.

“ITU and triathlon is proud to be featured in the Youth Olympics Games, particularly going down in history as the first medal awarded in Singapore 2010,” said Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC Member, who also sits on the IOC Coordination Commission for the Games. “We firmly believe that the spirit of the Youth Olympic Games can help inspire the world’s youth and the triathlon stars of the future will be showcased in Nanjing 2014.”

Athletes born between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 1998 will be eligible to participate in the triathlon competitions in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, slated for 16-28 August 2014.

A Continental YOG Qualifying Event in each of the five continents will be contested from 1 January 2014 and 8 June 2014.  Each will consist of an individual sprint triathlon on the first day and a triathlon mixed relay on the second day.

Each Continental YOG Qualifying Event will have a quota of athletes based on the number and performance of NOCs with National Federations affiliated to ITU.  The maximum per continent, per gender are:

Africa – 3
Americas – 8
Asia – 5
Europe – 11
Oceania – 2
TOTAL – 29

The host country will be entitled to one women’s spot and one men’s spot.  Two universality spots per gender will be available to eligible NOCs.

The dates and locations of the Continental YOG Qualifying Events will be confirmed shortly.
