McQuaid wins at Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens

Gambles defends title.

Victoria, B.C.’s Melanie McQuaid won her first ever Ironman 70.3 title today at Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens in Washington.

McQuaid, a three-time XTERRA World Champion, swam 29:19 to exit the water third, biked (2:29:51) into the race lead, then ran 1:25:59, to take the win in 4:27:16. American Tyler Stewart ran a women’s best half marathon (1:24:35) but fell 20 seconds short of McQuaid for second. New Zealand’s Samantha Warriner started the run in third and maintained that position right to the finish line. Canada’s Samantha McGlone finished 4th (4:32:41), and Vancouver age grouper (W30-34) Karen Tulloch finished 7th overall (among all women).

The USA’s Joe Gambles used a race rest run (1:14:57) to defend his title in 3:57:47. A pair of Australian’s occupied the next two spots. Paul Ambrose overtook Luke Bell on the run to finish second (3:59:07), and Bell settled for third (3:59:53).
