Kyle Jones wins his third race in a row
McMahon gets third at ITU Weihai in China.
Victoria’s Kyle Jones made it three ITU race wins in as many weeks by winning again today at the Weihai ITU Premium Asian Cup race in China.
Jones hung out the front pack during the swim and bike, then ran away from everyone during the 10 km run thanks to a 31:50 split – the only athlete to run sub-32 minutes – to take the win in 2:00:03. Like last week at ITU Amakusa, fellow Canuck Brent McMahon finished third (2:01:03) to Jones.
“The race played out very similar to last week in Amakusa. A small group of 4 of us exited the water together. We were caught by 2 other guys in the first 5k of the bike and the 6 of us rode together and got a lead,” said Jones to Triathlon Magazine Canada. “I had a really good transition and was first out onto the run. I was able to run controlled for the first 5k and then picked up the pace on the second half and opened a gap.”
Jones started the streak with the first win in his career at ITU Ixtapa on May 28, and notched a second win last week at ITU Amakusa in Japan.
“Going into the race I felt good but inevitably I was carrying a bit more fatigue compared to the weeks prior. My legs didn’t feel quite as strong on the run but I was still able to execute my race plan and get the job done so I’m happy,” said Jones. “I’m on my way back to Victoria now for a good block of training. Next up is the Edmonton World Cup on July 10th.”
