ITU Youth Olympic Games Qualifier

Ridenour and Powell lead Canadians to earn qualifying slots in Monterrey.

Today, Christine Ridenour and Brook Powell led the way for the Canadian Team at the ITU Triathlon American Youth Olympic Games Qualifier in Monterrey, Mexico.

Ridenour finished third (1:00:05) after being passed in the last kilometer by Mexico’s Adriana Barazza (59:46), and the USA’s Kelly Whitley (59:59). Canadians Allison Hooper (1:01:25), and Dominika Jamnicky (1:01:31) completed the top five. Fellow Canucks Maghalie Rochette was 12th (1:03:41), Hillary Willie 13th (1:03:50), and Amelie Kretz 22nd (1:07:20).

Meanwhile, Powell finished eighth (55:38) to be the top Canadian in the youth men’s race. American Kevin McDowell won the 750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run event after breaking away early on the bike, taking a comfortable 50 second lead unto the run where he would not be caught (53:46). Mexico’s Octavio Oliveros (54:33), and Vinicio Ibarra (54:54) grabbed second and third positions. Canadians Marc-Antoine Christin was 18th (56:44), followed by Riley MacCharles in 21st (57:06), Charles Brault in 35th (58:48), and Riley Unger in 36th (58:56).

The event offered youth participants a chance to grab one of eight qualifying places for their country for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, which will take place in Singapore this August 14-26. The top eight finishing countries in both the men and women’s races secured one slot for their National Federation at the upcoming Games. Canada earned both youth women and men’s slots for the Youth Olympic Games.
