Ironman 70.3 Philippines

Cebu, Philippines

Every year the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines draws a quality international field with some of the top Hawaii Ironman contenders, and this year is no different.

Three time defending Championing Pete Jacobs will return to Cebu to try for his fourth straight victory at the race he loves to use as a kick start to his final Kona preparations. “This race is perfect to get a feel and reminder of what a hot race really feels like. I then use these memories in my training for Hawaii to visualize how it will feel, and prepare myself mentally to be stronger for those hot conditions” Says Jacobs.

Having raced here for all 4 years of the event, Pete is well known by the Filipinos and has thousands of fans here who are excited to see him coming back to race as Ironman World Champion. Jacobs added “This race is unique in that it showcases the country and it’s famous traits all in one experience. The amazing marine life under the swim course – which is off the beach of the Shangri La Mactan Resort and the infamous Filipino hospitality – while the bike course is lined with 100,000 spectators and the pre and post race ceremonies show off the amazing local cultural traditions and food in a spectacle unrivalled at any other race I’ve been to.”

The other crowd favorite will be Chris McCormack, a previous starter in the inaugural Philippines Ironman 70.3 in 2009. Then he finished 2nd, and would no doubt love to have a strong showing against Pete, as they will line up for the Ironman World Championship just 2 months later. Chris has been through the Philippines earlier this year for the 5150 and a book signing and has a strong connection to the Philippines, particularly as he is one of Manny Pacquiao’s biggest fans.

Courtney Atkinson just started racing long course races this year and already has a string of victories. His strength over all three disciplines and speed from his ITU racing makes him a real danger. Another Australian who loves racing Asia, he will be in top form as he focuses on the 70.3 World Championship.

Cameron Brown has been another regular face in the Philippines, and has had a couple of podium finishes here, and four podium finishes in Kona. Cameron knows how hot it gets here and will be tough competition for the Aussie’s with his super consistent talent.

Brent McMahon from Canada is relatively new to 70.3 racing, but already has impressed with a big win in the Ironman 70.3 North America Championship race in St George against a huge field. He is definitely one to watch for the win.

Two time Vaseline Xterra Off-Road-Triathlon Philippines Champion Ben Allen, also from Australia is another talent in the field and will have an advantage in the heat as he is very accustomed to racing in the Philippines. It could come down to who runs best in the heat, and Allen will be a real chance if he does.

In a race that sold out in 4 days, with medals and trophies designed by Cebuano World class designer Kenneth Cobonpue and the high profile field and quality of the race and surrounding events, the Philippines Ironman 70.3 is a stand out event in Asia Pacific region, and an international benchmark.

In the women’s field is 15 time Ironman Champion Belinda Granger of Australia, who is having a stellar year with more wins than not, and is a regular Philippines visitor and fan and is the defending champion for the 5150 and winner of the 70.3 here in 2011.

Tough to beat will be the defending champion, Caroline Steffen, one of the strongest female triathletes over recent years. The race favorite everywhere she goes, it will be up to everyone else to catch and pass her once her strong bike has taken hold of the race.

Bree Wee has been on the podium many times here in the Philippines, and after a close race against Belinda in Honu 70.3, she is one to watch. Bree loves to race in the heat and draws lots of energy from the huge crowds.

It seems that 95% of the professionals who are racing are returning from previously having competed in the Philippines. No doubt the incredible waters, crowds, hospitality, cultural and holiday experiences, as well as outstanding race organization keep bringing them back.

“Last year after the race, I spent hours in the water out the front of the hotel watching marine life, and a group of us went and swam with whale sharks at another location. There’s so many incredible experiences here, it’s one of my favorite trips each year. That’s why Jaimie and I are back for our fifth time!” Jacobs said.

No doubt many triathletes will want to be there just to watch the race, as some of the worlds best and toughest triathletes tear each other apart under a scorching sun, thick humidity, and in front of 100,000 spectators on August 4, 2013.
