Hoogland and O’Donnell win Ironman 70.3 Calgary
Gross finishes a close second. Wurtele gets fifth in the men's race.
Ottawa’s Tenille Hoogland led from start to finish to win the Ironman 70.3 Calgary title today. Hoogland swam 26:37, and rode 2:26:15 to take an 8:38 lead onto the run. Despite faltering in the half marathon (1:38:00), her lead was just enough to stay ahead of a Victoria’s Sara Gross who ran 1:29:05 to come up short of Hoogland by 7 seconds. Hoogland took the title in 4:34:21, Gross was second in 4:34:27, and the USA’s Mackenzie Madison placed third (4:36:52). Calgary’s Danelle Kabush, known for her XTERRA accomplishments, finished fourth (4:37:18).
New Zealand’s Graham O’Grady (24:27) led American Tim O’Donnell out of the water by just two seconds but that was the last time O’Donnell would trail all day. He rode the top bike split of 2:10:16 to grab a firm grip on the race lead, and he added a 1:18:14 run to win his second Ironman 70.3 Calgary title in 3:56:24 (less than a minute off of his 3:55:28 course record set in 2009). Fellow American Jordan Rapp finished 6:14 back in 4:02:38, and in third was another American Brian Fleischmann (4:03:26). Kelowna’s Trevor Wurtele was Canada’s top male in fifth (4:04:50).
