Cartmell and Grice win Ironman UK

It’s only appropriate that a pair of British athletes took home titles at the Ironman UK today. Both Fraser Cartmell and Yvette Grice won by five minute plus margins. Cartmell led right out of the water (43:34), built his lead with the top 5:02:47 bike, and finished with a 2:49:55 marathon for his 8:40:18 win. Fellow Brit, Stephen Bayliss chased in second all-day and kept that position right to the finish line (8:46:19). Grice also led the swim (50:03), lost the lead on the bike to defending champion Bella Bayliss’ race best bike (5:48:25), but ran an impressive and unmatched 3:02:03 run to overtake Bayliss for the win. Canada’s Donna Phelan struggled on the marathon and finished fifth (10:42:57).

Tajsich and Al-Sultan win the first Ironman Regensburg

Sonja Tajsich made her hometown happy today by dominating the women’s race at the inaugural Ironman Regensburg. Tajsich was the only woman to bike sub-5 hours (4:59:34), and didn’t not let up on the run, going 3:09:06, also the fastest split on the day for the women. Her finish time of 9:09:46 was well ahead of fellow countrywoman Katja Rabe (9:32:04).

2005 ironman World Champion, Faris Al-Sultan, came from behind and used a 2:56:16 marathon to pass a fading Andreas Böcherer for his fourth Ironman title of his career. Al-Sultan finished in 8:13:37, and Böcherer followed 4:51 later (8:18:28) for second place.
