Shimano introduces new Shimano 105 12-speed mechanical groupset

Shimano has announced the new 105 R7100 mechanical 12-speed groupset. The new addition to the Japanese bike brand’s line has been introduced to create dependable and easy-to-maintain components at an affordable price. The lightweight groupset provides riders with reliable mechanical shifting, allowing them to experience a natural riding sensation without worrying about battery life. The new gruppo also kicks it up a notch, by jumping from 11 to 12 speed.

The new drivetrain

The RD-R7100 rear derailleur uses Shimano Shadow RD tech. The proprietary design involves a low-profile design and single-tension construction, resulting in a smooth, efficient and quiet performance for riders. Similarly, the FD-R7100 front derailleur employs toggle-link construction, ensuring easy and hassle-free gear shifts when transitioning between different chainrings.

 

With the transition to a 12-speed configuration, the groupset introduces sought-after high and low gear ratios, complemented by well-spaced intermediary gear steps. The cassette options are 11-34T and 11-36T, with the FC-R7100 Hollowtech II 12-speed cranksets featuring 50-34T and 52-36T.

By pairing 50-34T chainrings with either an 11-34T or 11-36T cassette, you can tackle the steepest ascents while maintaining an efficient and sustainable cadence. Meanwhile, the semi-compact 52-36T setup of the Shimano 105 mechanical prevents the risk of excessively high RPMs during descents or when accelerating on fast, flat roads. No more fears of spinning out on those quick group rides.

Improved stopping power

Braking performance has been finely tuned for seamless integration with the existing Shimano 105 BR-7170 calipers, in order to improve stopping efficiency. The redesigned brake calipers provide an increased 10 per cent clearance with the brake rotor, Shimano claims, reducing instances of contact and contributing to a quieter riding experience. This system is characterized by its lightweight build, durability, and maintenance ease, incorporating targeted advancements to simplify brake bleeding. The new group is solely compatible with disc brakes, as well.

 

Shimano says that the lever action has been refined for a lighter and smoother feel, expanding the control area for braking. This improvement also leads to a reduction in reach, in order to further enhance the ergonomic aspect.

Better brake levers and cleaned-up front end

Tailored to accommodate hands of all sizes and contours, the ST-R7120 shift/brake levers introduce a smooth shifting encounter through modern ergonomic mechanical shift levers, offering heightened comfort. The integrated cables also declutters the handlebar area.
