Jonathan Brownlee runs to victory at ITU WTS Madrid

Canada's Kyle Jones struggles to a 27th place finish.

One of the most challenging courses on the World Triathlon Series got the best of Canada’s Kyle Jones on Saturday. The leader of the Canadian squad finished a disappointing 27th.

After a solid 1.5-kilometre non-wetsuit swim at Casa de Campo, the 28-year-old Jones followed his pre-race strategy by settling into a chase pack of 30 athletes midway through the hilly 40-kilometre bike course. But the challenging bike leg sucked the energy from his legs, dropping the Oakville, Ont. resident back in the pack on 10-kilometre run. Jones finished with a time of one hour, 56 minutes, 46 seconds (1:56:46).

“It was tough for me today. Last weekend I was flying at the Grand Prix race in France, but today was a struggle,” said Jones, who added a crash on the bike earlier this year in San Diego may have taken its toll on him mentally and physically. “I’m having trouble figuring out why I felt off compared to last weekend.”

“The bike course here is one that normally suits me well so it is frustrating to feel sluggish. When you’re off your game just a little in these World Triathlon Series races it shows, and when it’s on a challenging course like Madrid it is even more evident,” added Jones. “I know that I’m capable, and want to go out and give a performance that reflects the quality of training I have put in. I have high expectations of myself and need to get more races under my belt moving forward.”

Great Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee stole the spotlight to remain unbeaten in just two World Triathlon Series races this year. The Olympic bronze medallist pushed the pace on the swim and bike to set up an easy run for his second-straight victory. Brownlee led out of the water and hammered the pace on the bike with four others where he opened up a 90 second gap on the chase group by the time they exited the second transition area. Brownlee wasted no time dropping the entire field on the first lap of the run to win easily with a time of 1:50:42.

Spain’s Javier Gomez finished 50 seconds off the pace in the silver-medal position with a time of 1:51:32. Russia’s Ivan Vasiliev won the race for the bronze medal with a time of 1:52:02.

The World Triathlon Series continues July 6 in Kitzbuhel, Austria. Jones, and his Canadian teammates, will return to Canada where the 2012 Olympian will attempt to defend his lone World Cup victory in Edmonton, June 23, 2013.
