Winter Triathlon Race Series Gets Underway in Quebec this Weekend

snowshoeTriathlon Quebec launches its winter triathlon series, Coupe des Neiges Race Series, with a race in Saint-Donat on Saturday February 1. Combining snowshoeing, skating, and cross-country skiing, the winter format allows for excellent cross-training.The series features four race categories including: junior (16-19), senior (20-39), masters (40-59)  and grand masters (60+).

The “Coupe des Neiges” (Snow Cup) will host three races in February with the provincial championships held in March. The following are race dates and locations:
February 1, 2014 – Triathlon d’hiver – Saint-Donat
February 9, 2014 – Défi hivernal Bizz-Or  Longueuil
February 15, 2014 – Challenge des glaces Saint-Denis-de-Brompton
March 8 and 9, 2014 – Québec ITU triathlon d’hiver (Provincial Championship)

The Saint-Donat race  has two distances to chose from including the Classing Triathlon: 5km run, 5.1 km skate and 6km of cross-country skiing. The ITU distance features 4.2 km of snowshoeing, a 12km skate and 6km of cross-country skiing.

“Triathlon continues to be one of the fastest growing sports for elite and recreational sport enthusiasts around the world, and it is innovative race disciplines like the winter triathlon in Quebec that will allow us to introduce our sport to more people in Canada while extending our race opportunities throughout the year,” said Luc Landriault, president, Triathlon Canada. “Canada has a passion for playing sports on snow and ice, and I think this is a tremendous opportunity to keep fit year-round while adapting a summer sport into our winter climate.”
Athletes will acquire points during each race. The three best results out of the four races will count to the overall rankings. In case of a tie, results at the provincial championships will be used to break the tie. Rankings are displayed by category and overall. Rankings are accumulated only for athletes in good standing with Triathlon Quebec.
