An update on races affected by the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

News for July 21

Ironman Australia “will not take place as planned”

With the Greater Sydney area in lockdown, Ironman has announced that both Ironman Australia and Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie won’t be happening this September. No news on whether or not a date for later this year will be set or not.

Ironman Wales cancelled for 2021

While this year’s race in Tenby won’t happen, the good news is that Ironman has inked a five year deal with the area, so the race will be held from 2022 to 2026. The race returns on Sept. 11, 2022.

Ironman announces that a number of its Asian races “cannot take place” in 2021

As many countries in Asia deal with surges in COVID-19 cases thanks to the highly infectious delta variant of the virus, Ironman has cancelled (not that they’ll use that word) a number of events this year.

Ironman 70.3 Taitung in Taiwan returns on March 6, 2022.
Ironman Gurye in South Korea “cannot take place” and Ironman is “working dilligently to secure a race date in 2022.
Ironman 70.3 Vietnam returns on May 8, 2022

Barrelman Triathlon canceled

We reported on this update – while Ontario is moving ahead with opening plans, getting permits for large events remain a challenge.

Challenge Roth gets go-ahead for September race

Authorities in Germany have given the organizers of Challenge Roth the “green light for further planning for the Roth triathlon on 5 September.” According to a release from race organizers the race will be able to go ahead with “an extensive hygiene plan and a 50% reduction in the number of participants.” There won’t be any other “side” events, just the long-distance race, and spectators are asked not to gather on the course this year. There won’t be any of the normal “hotspots” set up for fan viewing. The bike course has also been altered due to construction and to also ensure there aren’t any large gatherings on the famous “Solar hill.”

World Triathlon Championship Series Hamburg postponed to September

According to a release from World Triathlon today, the Hamburg event, one of the biggest on the circuit, will be postponed until after the Olympics. “Thank you for the continued patience of all those involved since our last update with the announcement that the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon 2021 cannot take place in July. We are pleased that we can now confirm the new competition date on September 18 & 19, 2021.”

Ironman Kalmar Sweden canceled for 2021

OK, the Ironman update page puts it slightly differently – “we regret to share that the Ironman Kalmar Sweden cannot take place in 2021 and will return on August 20, 2022.”

Ironman Canada moves to September

As we reported, organizers have postponed the return of Ironman racing to Penticton by a month. According to a press release from Ironman:

Based on the guidelines from the Province of British Columbia in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as our conversations with regional and local health authorities, together we have decided to postpone the 2021 Subaru Ironman Canada – Penticton event from August 29 to September 26 when we collectively agree that this event will be better positioned to take place on this race date. Our team will continue to work hard developing and refining operational plans in a manner consistent with local community objectives and within the guidelines and recommendations set by public health entities as it relates to COVID-19. All permits will be issued pending health regulations and approvals.

Ironman Bolton adds 70.3 for 2021

Ironman has announced that for this year only, Bolton, UK, will host both an Ironman race on July 4 and an Ironman 70.3 event on September 26.

“Following a dearth of racing over the last year and a half, the new event will be a welcome addition to the UK triathlon calendar in 2021,” Ironman said in a press release. “The race will appeal to both seasoned triathletes looking to extend their season as well as those with the ambition of earning the coveted title of Ironman by getting a feel for racing in and around Bolton before taking on the full distance triathlon in 2022.”

Ironman 70.3 Maceio rescheduled

According to the Ironman Updates page, the 70.3 race in Brazil can’t take place in August, but has been rescheduled to December 5. 2021.

Ironman Shanghai “cannot take place”

According to the Ironman: “In light of the continued guidelines and precautions as mandated by the relevant authorities in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we regret to inform that the 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 Shanghai Chongming triathlon cannot take place. We are working diligently to secure a race date in 2022 and further event updates will be communicated as soon as additional relevant information and details emerge.

Ironman Gurye set for August

The full-distance event in Korea has been rescheduled to August 29.

Ironman 70.3 Philippines Cebu cancelled

According to Ironman: “After consultation with City of Lapu Lapu in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting guidelines and precautions, we regret to inform you that the event cannot take place in 2021 and will now return on August 7, 2022.”

Subaru and Multisport Canada Race Series update race calendars

The Ontario government has released a ” Plan for Reopening Ontario” that has given some hope to a race season happening in the province this summer. With that in mind, both the Subaru Triathlon Series and the Multisport Canada Triathlon Series have provided updated calendars.

“After an initial review of the Provincial Government’s Plan for Reopening Ontario, we firmly believe that there is now light at the end of the tunnel for the return of some of our events this summer!” the Multisport organizers wrote in an update today. “This is the news we’ve all been waiting to hear for over a year however, we still need to hear from our municipal partners and local health units. The issue is whether our events fit into Step 2, which allows “Outdoor sports leagues and events” or whether we will need to wait until Step 3, which allows for “Larger indoor and outdoor gatherings.” The other factor is the final timelines of these “Steps.”

According to today’s Multisport Canada post, the timelines outlined by the government include:

Step 1 to begin the week of June 14^th and last for at least 21 days
Step 2 could begin on the week of July 5^th and last for at least another 21 days
Step 3 could begin on the week of July 26^th at the earliest.

Welland – weekend of June 26^th & 27th

The above timelines for Reopeening will sadly not allow us to host our Welland Triathlon in late June. The event is not cancelled as we are currently working with the City of Welland on rescheduling the event to a date later in the summer, so stay tuned!

Bracebridge – weekend of July 24^th & 25^th

We would need to see if our “COVID reconfigured” event fits into the government parameters for Step 2 or whether we need to wait until Step 3.

Toronto Island – weekend of Aug 21^st & 22^nd

Wasaga Beach – weekend of Aug 28^th & 29^th

Gravenhurst – weekend of Sept 11^th & 12^th

The prospect seems very high for an event as we hopefully will have reached Step 3 by this point in time. We likely will need to use our “COVID reconfigured” event model and spread the event over 3-4 days with smaller numbers each day.

The Subaru Triathlon Series will tentatively begin at the end of July, too, as long as racing fits into the government’s Step 2 parameters. The Guelph Lake 1 race will definitely be cancelled, which we assume means the PTO-sponsored Subaru Chase scheduled for that weekend also won’t go ahead.

Here’s the revised Subaru Triathlon Series schedule:

Guelph Lake 1: June 19/20 – Cancelled

Niagara: July 25 – Will keep this on the schedule for now until we get some clarity on reopening steps

Guelph Lake 2: August 14/15 – This event would mimic our “usual” GL1 event with an Olympic and TAT on Saturday and Sprint on Sunday.

Milton: September 4

Owen Sound: September 12

Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant rescheduled to September

According to the Ironman updates page, Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant, along with the Ironman 5i50 and Sprint events in Quebec “cannot take place as originally scheduled.”

The 5i50 and Sprint events “cannot take place in 2021” – could we say cancelled? The Ironman 70.3 race has been tentatively rescheduled to Sept. 12, 2021.

Ironman Ireland, Cork and Ironman 70.3 Ireland, Cork “cannot take place in 2021”

The events that were scheduled for August will “return on August 13 and 14, 2022.”

Ironman Vitoria-Gasteiz rescheduled to September

The popular Spanish race has been moved from its normal July date to September 5, 2021.

Ironman 70.3 Vietnam moved to August

The event will now be held on Aug. 15, 2021.

Ironman 70.3 Panama “rescheduled” to Feb. 6, 2022

According to the Ironman update page, “Based on the latest conversations with the Health Authorities of the Republic of Panama in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the health and safety of our community being an utmost priority, we regret to advise that the Ironman 70.3 Panama cannot take place in September and has been rescheduled for February 6, 2022.”

Desaru Coast Multisport Festival “cannot take place in 2021”

The event in Malaysia that included 70.3, 5150, Sprint and IronKids races won’t happen this year – the next race date is March 4 to 6, 2022.

5150 Bohol “will return on July 10, 2022”

The event in the Philippines “cannot take place in 2021” according to the Ironman updates page.

Ironman 70.3 Warsaw and 5150 Warsaw rescheduled

According to the Ironman update page, the two events in Poland have been rescheduled to Sept. 5, 2021.

Ironman 70.3 Jönköping rescheduled

The event in Sweden which will be the European TriClub Championship “cannot take place in July and has been rescheduled for September 18, 2021.”

Ironman Taiwan cancelled

We reported on this here – the event “cannot take place in 2021” and returns on April 10, 2022.

Ironman 70.3 Goseong postponed

The event in Korea has been moved from May to July 25, 2021.

Ironman 70.3 Vietnam cannot take place

According to the Ironman update page, organizers are “working diligently to secure a race date in the 2021 and further event updates will be communicated as soon as additional relevant information and details emerge.”

Dynamic Race Events cancels 2021 racing

Long overdue note on this one, but the company’s message on Facebook outlines the challenges race directors will be going through in 2021 as they try to figure out what will and won’t be possible in the way of racing this year:

News for April 20, 2021

Ironman races in Europe postponed

Today we learned that the pandemic has forced Ironman to postpone three events because of the “continued status of the COVID-19 pandemic” and “the resulting restrictions in place”:

The Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt that was to take place in June has now been postponed to Aug. 15, 2021.
Ironman Austria-Karnten scheduled for July has been rescheduled to Sept. 19, 2021
Ironman Switzerland Thun that was also scheduled for July has been rescheduled to Sept. 5

Ironman Australia postponed

We reported earlier today that Ironman Australia has been postponed to Sept. 5 – not due to COVID, but because of floods that have devastated the region.

Ironman Philippines, 70.3 Subic Bay Philippines moved to Oct. 17

According to the Ironman updates page, “after consultation with Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting guidelines and precautions, we regret to inform you that the event(s) cannot take place as scheduled and have determined it will be better positioned to return on October 17, 2021.”

Ironman announces a number of cancelations and postponements

A number of early-season European races either won’t happen in 2021 or will be postponed until later this year, according to the ironman.com/updates page:

Ironman 70.3 Luxembourg-Region Moselle “can’t take place in June and has been rescheduled for September 11, 2021.”
Ironman Hamburg “cannot take place in June and has been rescheduled for August 29, 2021.”
Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire “cannot take place in June and has been rescheduled for July 18th, 2021.”
Ironman 70.3 Switzerland “cannot take place in June and has been rescheduled for August 8, 2021.”
Ironman 70.3 Kraichgau and 5150 Kraichgau “cannot take place in June and has been rescheduled for May 29, 2022.” The statement on the site continues: “We acknowledge that this latest shift is not the news any of us were hoping to receive and while we were working to obtain an alternate date in 2021, local stakeholders believe the event will be better positioned in May of 2022. “

Challenge St. Polten still plans to go ahead

In a news release Challenge St. Polten has laid out its plans to host the race on May 30:

The race is planned to take place as scheduled on May 30, 2021. The safety of all involved has top priority. A comprehensive prevention concept, developed together with experts, ministries and the Austrian Triathlon Federation, should ensure a safe and smooth execution.

Since autumn 2020, no triathlon event has taken place in Austria. Numerous big-name events had to be completely canceled in 2020 – including the premiere of Challenge St. Polten. The desire for triathlon – for a bit of normality – is great. The current situation in Austria and throughout Europe is tense. Nevertheless, the team around Challenge St. Polten is convinced that a triathlon as an outdoor event can take place at the end of May. Many discussions with experts, considerations and planning have led to this decision. “We feel an incredible support from the city, the state, the authorities, the federation and our partners & sponsors”, says Christoph Schwarz, organizer of Challenge St. Polten. “Safety is our top priority. Should this be endangered, we will act quickly and take measures.”

The prevention concept is comprehensive: the start-finish area will be cordoned off. Access is only possible for athletes plus an accompanying person. Both must have tested negative. Supporting programs such as the pasta party will be omitted. Instead, the athletes can look forward to a culinary goodie bag from Spar. The after-finish will also be relocated and enlarged … The EXPO will be located outside the restricted area and is therefore also accessible to other visitors and interested people.

Ironman 70.3 Monterrey postponed

“Based on the latest discussions with and direction from the Tourism and Health Authorities in the State of Nuevo Leon and City of Monterrey in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the health and safety of our community being an utmost priority, we regret to advise that the IRONMAN 70.3 Monterrey cannot take place on April 25,” Ironman writes on its update page.

The goal is to postpone the event until the fall.

Ironman 70.3 Graz moved to August

Austrian officials have rescheduled Ironman 70.3 Graz, which was supposed to happen in May, to August 15, 2021.

Subaru Triathlon Series announces tentative race schedule and Subaru PTO Chase

We reported on the upcoming Subaru PTO Chase at Guelph Lake Conservation area here. The series has also announced its tentative race schedule with full knowledge that “at least initially, we may be restricted in gathering numbers and will have to make adjustments to the way we operate.”

Guelph Lake 1: June 19/20 – We anticipate holding a number of 100 person waves to limit the number of people gathering at one time. Details on timing/distances will be coming out soon.

Niagara: July 25 – The hope is that by this date, we can hold larger events “as normal” with increased prevention measures in place.

Guelph Lake 2: August 14/15 – This event would mimic our “usual” GL1 event with an Olympic and TAT on Saturday and Sprint on Sunday.

Milton: September 4 – moved from the original June 2021 date.

Owen Sound: September 12

Registration for the series this year will be on hold until race organizers Trisport Canada “have a clearer picture of what the event landscape will look like in 2021.”

Challenge Lisboa moved to Sept. 25

According to a release from Challenge Family, Challenge Lisboa is now scheduled to take place in September.

“For us and lots of athletes it’s a special week right now, because actually Challenge Lisboa was supposed to take place this Saturday, March 27. We had to postpone that date a few months ago, because all the COVID-19 measures prevented us from organizing a race in a safe way. Maybe even more than usual, we can’t wait to see all those athletes at our start in September,” says race director Gustavo Caraça.

Ironman Texas postponed

We reported on this earlier today – you can read the update on Ironman Texas, Ironman 70.3 Texas and Ironman 70.3 Lubbock here. Thanks to a stay home order that affects the bike course, Ironman Texas can’t take place in The Woodlands in April – Ironman is hoping to announce a new October date soon. The 70.3 races in Texas are still scheduled for the same dates – April 11 for the Galveston race (Ironman 70.3 Texas) while Lubbock remains on the schedule for June 27.

Ironman also announced that there will be a new full-distance race in Texas at some point in 2021.

News for March 9, 2021

Ironman 70.3 Muskoka moved to August

Today we got news on the first Canadian Ironman event to be postponed. Here’s what Ironman posted on its update page:

Based on the recommendations from the local authorities and other key stakeholders in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, we regret to share that the Subaru Ironman 70.3 Muskoka triathlon cannot take place on July 11, 2021 and have determined it will be better positioned to return on August 29, 2021.

No news at this point about any other Canadian events – Ironman 70.3 Mont-Tremblant is scheduled to take place on June 27.

New date for Ironman New Zealand

After a lockdown forced organizers to call off this weekend’s race in New Zealand, they have announced that the new date for the race will be March 27, 2021.

Ironman France postponed to September

The rescheduling of regional elections in France to June 13 to 20 due to the COVID-19 pandemic has forced organizers to move the race in Nice to September. According to the Ironman updates page:

“Unfortunately, as a result of this change, we regret to inform you that the Ironman France Nice cannot take place on the original June date and has been rescheduled for September 12, 2021, coinciding with Ironman 70.3 Nice.”

Multisport Triathlon Series announces 2021 Series overview

Ontario-based Multisport Canada has outlined the plans for “both modified in-person triathlons, as well as virtual triathlons” in its latest newsletter. The Lakeside and K-Town events will be offered as virtual events with an entry fee of $25 and an option to purchase a race-specific medal and T-shirt. The in-person events will take place in Welland, Bracebridge and Toronto Island. Some of the modifications include:

Several independent 100-person cohorts each day
Hosted over three (3) to five (5) days (e.g. Fri to Sun)
Individual Starts (e.g. one person every 10-15sec)
Draw Prizes awarded virtually the day following the event
As it is not fair to compare races done on different days and at different times, there will be no formal age-group awards

PTO supports Husky Triathlon Festival

Those looking for some live pro triathlon action to watch this weekend can tune into the YouTube and Facebook coverage of the Husky Triathlon Festival starting at 2 pm EST on Saturday. The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has added AUD$20,000 to the existing AUD$15,000 prize purse for the race.

The race is expected to feature a duel between Australia’s Ellie Salthouse and New Zealand’s Amelia Watkinson, while Craig Alexander will be part of the coverage team watching Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield take on Tim Reed and Tim Van Berkel.

Europe Triathlon postpones a number of events

Europe Triathlon (what we used to know as the European Triathlon Union) has changed its race calendar because “the situation in Europe regarding the COVID-19 pandemic is not improving at the speed that had been expected,” according to endurancebiz.com.

That means that the Europe Triathlon Winter Championships in Romania, which were scheduled to take place in Romania in March have now been postponed – the hope is they can be staged before the end of the year.

Other events that are postponed include:

2021 Europe Triathlon Challenge Long Distance Championships Roth – postponed to Sept. 5, 2021
2021 Europe Triathlon Cup (and Junior Cup) Quarteira – postponed

Ironman Brazil postponed to Nov. 7, 2021

According to the Ironman updates page, “Based on the recommendations from the local health authorities and Mayor Gean Marques Loureiro in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, we regret to share that the IRONMAN Brazil triathlon cannot take place on May 30, 2021 and have determined it will be better positioned to return on November 7, 2021.”

Ditto for Ironman 70.3 Florianopolis and Punta del Este

The Florianopolis race has been postponed from April 25 to September 19, while the Punta del Este race moves from April 18 to November 14.

WTCS Abu Dhabi moves to November

Originally slated for March 1, the first World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) of the year in Abu Dhabi has been rescheduled to November 5-6, 2021.

“The decision, backed unanimously by the World Triathlon Executive Board, will not only allow more time for the current worldwide travel restrictions to ease, but will be able to serve as a test event for the 2022 Abu Dhabi World Triathlon Championship Finals, also taking place at the end of the season,” according to a release from World Triathlon.

World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki cancelled

The announcement also included a cancellation notice for and early season world cup event in Japan that was supposed to take place on March 20.

“World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki, due to take place on 20 March, unfortunately had to be canceled by the Japanese Triathlon Union and the local organizing committee, due to the current travel restrictions in the region,” World Triathlon reports.

News for February 12, 2021

Ironman 70.3 Geelong rescheduled

With just over a week to go, the first Ironman pro race of the year has been postponed to March due to a state-wide five-day lockdown in Victoria. Here’s the news from the Ironman update page:

Following the announcement from the Victorian Government today (12 February 2021) that Victoria will commence a state-wide lockdown for five days starting at midnight tonight, we are unfortunately advising that Ironman 70.3 Geelong 2021 will not be taking place as planned on 21 February 2021.

However, thanks to the support of our stakeholders, we can advise that Ironman 70.3 Geelong will be postponed to Sunday 28 March 2021. Please note this date is subject to final written approvals from key stakeholders that we expect to receive within the week.

Ironman Taiwan postponed

“In light of the continued guidelines and precautions as mandated by the Penghu County Government in relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we regret to inform that the 2021 Ironman Taiwan triathlon cannot take place as originally scheduled for March 21, 2021,” according to the Ironman update page.

We reported on this announcement last night – the classic Ironman U.S. opener won’t happen in March this year.

Ironman 70.3 Puerto Rico … cannot take place in 2021

Still not using that cancelled word. According to the Ironman.com/update page: “In light of the guidelines and restrictions as part of the updated executive order from the Governor of Puerto Rico, and in alignment with local officials, we regret to inform that 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico triathlon cannot take place and will now return on March 20, 2022.”

Collins Cup rescheduled to August 28

The inaugural Collins Cup event has been delayed yet again – the new date for the race is August 28. It is still scheduled to take place at the x-bionicsphere in Samorin, Slovakia.

Super League Triathlon announces two more Arena Games events

After a successful indoor debut in Rotterdam last year, Super League Triathlon is bringing the event back on Apr. 18, along with another event in London, England on Mar. 27. The races will consist of three legs including a 200 m swim, a 4 km bike on the Zwift platform followed by a 1 km treadmill run. The order of the events will be shuffled for each leg.

St. Anthony’s Triathlon postponed to “fourth quarter” of 2021

According to a Facebook post, the popular Olympic-distance race near Tampa, Florida won’t be taking place in April.

2021 World Triahtlon Cup Hautulco moved to June 12 to 13

Originally scheduled for April, “local authorities and the Mexican Federation have decided to postpone the event until June,” according to a release from World Triathlon.

LA Triathlon moves to Oct. 24

According to the event website, the event that had been scheduled for May will now be taking place later in the year, too.

“The 2021 Herbalife24 Triathlon L.A. will move to October 24, 2021. We are committed to providing a unique and engaging event experience, while mitigating health and safety risks related to the spread of COVID-19. Our goal is to provide a full event weekend that includes pre-event activities, expo, opportunities for spectators to watch along the course, and an energetic finish line festival at L.A. Live.”

Challenge Miami offers refund guarantee

After the successful event in Daytona, Challenge North America is gearing up for the inaugural Challenge Miami race from March 12 to 14. According to the event website, if they have to cancel the event, they will be refunding entries, less the administration fee:

Race Guarantee: if for any reason the 2021 Challenge Miami race is cancelled by Challenge North America, we’ll refund athletes the registration fee, minus a $39 administrative fee. This is only if the operations team has to cancel for any reason.

Canada Man/Woman still aiming for July 4

In an email blast sent out today, the Xtri event in Lac Megantic, Quebec, one of three events that Endurance Adventure has planned for 2021.

“We are working with local authorities to ensure these events can take place no matter the situation,” the company says. The race has added an additional 25 spots to the event for this year. World Triathlon Montreal scheduled for June 23 to 27

Who knows where we’ll be at with regards to the pandemic in June, but registration is also open for the World Triathlon Montreal. According to the event website:

“The 2021 edition of the Groupe Copley World Triathlon is scheduled for its usual last weekend of June. The organizing team will take all the necessary measures to deliver a safe and sanitary event to you while respecting the measures in effect.”

UBC Tri Du cancelled for 2021

BC’s longest running triathlon, and usually the first outdoor race of the season in Canada, has been cancelled for this year. Here’s what organizers posted on the event website:

To our UBC Triathlon Community:

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, UBC Recreation has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 UBC Triathlon Duathlon event, originally scheduled for March 6. The safety of our staff and participants is, and has always been our utmost priority, and at this time hosting this event would compromise that integrity.

While we are disappointed that we are unable to provide the experience of the UBC Triathlon Duathlon this year, we recognize that continuing to host the event could contribute unnecessary risks to participants, staff, and the community. We appreciate your understanding and your continued perseverance to keep our community safe. We look forward to the time when we can once again bring this annual event to the community.

Ironman 70.3 Puerto Rico “cannot take place” in 2021

According to the Ironman updates page: “In light of the guidelines and restrictions as part of the updated executive order from the Governor of Puerto Rico, and in alignment with local officials, we regret to inform that 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico triathlon cannot take place and will now return on March 20, 2022.”

Ironman 70.3 South Africa rescheduled to September, Ironman Africa reschedule to November

More from the Ironman updates page: “In response to the recent developments around the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the South African Government has announced further limitations on indoor and outdoor gatherings which includes the closure of beaches around the country. In light of these new restrictions, and in alignment with the Buffalo City Municipality, we regret to inform you that the IRONMAN 70.3 South Africa cannot take place on January 24, 2021 and has been rescheduled for September 5, 2021.”

On a similar note, the “IRONMAN African Championship cannot take place on March 14, 2021 and has been rescheduled for November 21, 2021.”

Club La Santa postpones Volcano Triathlon

According to a release sent out this morning, “The Club La Santa Volcano Triathlon, originally planned for April, has also changed its date. The oldest running Triathlon in Spain, whose first addition was in 1984, we will now take place on the 6th November 2021.”
