Brownlee and Stimpson win British Triathlete of the Year Awards

Commonwealth Champions Alistair Brownlee and Jodie Stimpson were named the male and female Olympic Athletes of the Year award at the British Triathlon Awards Evening, hosted at Loughborough University last Friday. Both athletes claimed gold for England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with Jodie Stimpson winning the first medal of the Games, and Brownlee adding to his Olympic gold medal won at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

 

Alongside winning the Olympic Athlete of the Year award, both athletes were named British Triathlon Elite Triathletes of the Year. Stimpson won the opening two rounds of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Auckland and Cape Town as well as finishing fourth in the world-rankings. This season, Alistair Brownlee won the European title as well as the season finale at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton.

 

Upon receiving his award, Alistair Brownlee said, “Thank you very much. It’s been a good season and it’s always good to get some awards at the end of it, a bit of recognition. It’s not really what you do it for, you do it to win races and be the best athlete you can be, but it’s always nice to be recognized as well.”

Alistair’s highlight was the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as he continued: “It was definitely the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow that was my big aim for the year. Like any big aim, it’s always good to cross the line and pull it off. The Grand Final was the icing on the cake; it was really nice to have a good race there as well.”
