6 questions triathletes ask during their post-holidays return to training
You only took a couple of weeks off, but that can feel like a lifetime
It is officially the end of the holiday season, as the kids have returned to school and everything is back to normal. Maybe you’ve already been back to training for a while now, but today could be your first session after a lengthy end-of-season break. If you’re just getting back into things, you could be in for a tough week or so, as the first few workouts after a training break are always the hardest. You might find yourself questioning a few things about your training, including the following.
Was the pool always this cold?
You’re going to be asking yourself this the second you touch the water during your first trip back to the pool. Yes, it was the same temperature when you were there last, you were just used to braving the cold and diving in for your workouts. We know it’s not pleasant, but after a couple of laps you’ll be warm and ready to go.
Did something happen to my bike seat?
No, nothing has changed with your seat. It’s just that, after a couple of weeks away from cycling, you’ve forgotten how uncomfortable your bike seat really is. It won’t matter if you wear your cushiest shorts, your butt is going to hurt no matter what.
Isn’t the sun supposed to be up by now?
You’ve spent a dozen or so mornings in bed until 8 a.m. or later, so you’ve forgotten how long it takes for the sun to rise. Unfortunately, you’re going to be getting up in the dark for the next couple of months, because the answer is no, the sun isn’t supposed to be up yet. It might be by the time you’re done your workout.
I wasn’t this slow before the holidays, was I?
You were probably faster before you took your break. We know, it’s not fun being slower and feeling sluggish. The good news is you’ll bounce back soon enough.
Should I move to another sport?
Over the holidays you might have heard friends or family talking about their extracurricular sports. Maybe your brother is in a hockey league or your friend plays soccer. Those sound more chill, don’t they? Fewer early mornings and more fun exercise opportunities with pals, right? Well, that could be true, but remind yourself that you love triathlon. Also, you’ve spent thousands on your bike and other gear, so you probably shouldn’t quit the sport on a whim.
Am I ever going to feel good again?
Yes, you will. It might take a week or two of training, but in a short while you’ll be back to your old self and feeling great in the water, in the saddle, and in your running shoes.
