In Canada, the winter feels like it lasts forever, and for triathletes, this can be tough to handle. All we want to do is train outside and get into racing season, but it takes so long to get over that final hump of winter and into spring and on toward summer. Because of this prolonged season of cold or indoor training, it’s easy to lose motivation, even if races are on the horizon. Here are a few ways you can rediscover that motivation in your final push to spring.

Look at last year’s results

Take a look at your performances from last season. Were there any races that left you disappointed and hungry to do better at the next one? Were there triathlons that made you extremely proud of yourself? Did you have areas where you could improve, or maybe you finally felt like you had gotten a handle on one of the disciplines of the sport? Whatever the case, taking a look back at the results that motivated you in 2024 can help inspire you to continue that push in 2025.

Do a time trial

You might not be ready to race other people in an organized event just yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t race yourself. Plan a time trial in the pool, on the bike, or at the track. Set a goal for yourself  and do your best to reach (or beat) it. This will not only allow you to see where you’re at with your fitness as you approach race season, but it will also give you a shot of excitement for what’s to come ahead of your first triathlon of the year.

Sign up for a new event

Sometimes all you need to get excited and motivated for the upcoming season is to sign up for a race. A lot of people register for races months in advance, so the eagerness you felt back then has worn off by now. It might be worth looking for another race to add to your schedule. Find one that excites and interests you. It might propel you forward into your race season.

Discover new routes

Maybe all you need is a change of scenery. It’s easy to go out and bike and run in the same areas every day, but that can get boring. This week, try searching for new roads. This can make training more fun and give you a fresh perspective moving toward the first race of the year.
