Alberta-based Multisportscanada is offering a new series of running races that allows “runners to create their own race route while competing against others in real time.”

The goal is to combine “the best of the real-world and the virtual world using the new OpenRace iPhone app. During the race the app updates competitors on their position, pace, distance and time. Official results will be posted after each event. The OpenRace app is currently only available for iPhones.

“Having organized races for over twenty years, I know that people are missing the connection and competion in-person racing creates. I wanted to create a virtual race which will encourage runners to continue training and compete in real-me against others in a safe environment,” says Trevor Soll, the owner of Mulsportscanada. “It’s a ‘virtual’ real race that athletes from across the country and around the world can take part in. No one will be running alone.”

Open to runners of all ages and abilities, there are three weekends of races taking place on November 19, December 6 and December 13. Distances range from 5 km to a full marathon (42.2 km). For more information about the events, go to www.multisportscanada.com
