Lionel Sanders’ 2024 unbeaten streak ended today thanks to an incredible 2:36 marathon split by one of his training partners, Trevor Foley, who passed fellow American Matthew Marquardt in the closing miles of the race to take his first Ironman title.

Australia’s Josh Amberger led the men out of the water, with Marquardt in third, three seconds back, while Sanders finished the swim almost six minutes down, with Foley almost 30 seconds behind him.

Can Lionel Sanders win his first Ironman race since Arizona, 2017?

Marquardt would blast through the bike in 4:16:53, which put him 8:30 ahead of Sanders and Foley, with Canadian Jackson Laundry getting to T2 in fourth, 11:14 behind the leader. Marquardt gamely hung on to the lead until the 37 km point of the run, finally succumbing to Foley’s blistering pace through the challenging Lake Placid run course. Foley would fly through the finish line in 7:55:23 thanks to that 2:36:31 marathon split, with Marquardt taking second in 7:57:14. Sanders would run a 2:46:16 marathon and crossed the line in third (8:05:39), with France’s Arnaud Guilloux (8:07:46) taking fourth with American’ Chris Leiferman finishing fifth (8:10:50).
