Race Preview: The WTCS Returns to Hamburg

Home to the fastest sprint-distance run splits in WTCS history, Hamburg returns this weekend as the fifth stop of the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) and the halfway point of the 2026 season. The iconic race is also celebrating its 25th edition.

In the men’s race, reigning world champion Matt Hauser will be chasing a Hamburg hat-trick after victories in 2024 and 2025. Hayden Wilde will also be chasing a hat-trick, having won here in 2022 and 2023. Neither former winner, however, sits atop the Series standings. That honour belongs to Vasco Vilaça, who currently leads with 2,925 points and arrives with perhaps the most curious Hamburg résumé of anyone on the start list: four silver medals (2020, 2023, 2024, and 2025). Will Hamburg 2026 finally propel Vilaça to his first Hamburg victory?

Quiberon winner Dorian Coninx is also arriving in top form looking for back-to-back WTCS victories and his first win in Hamburg. And Miguel Hidalgo, who sits 343 points behind Vilaça in the standings, will be looking to move from silver to gold this season.

On the women’s side, Jeanne Lehair, the current Series leader despite not yet winning a race this season, has started every WTCS event and has not finished outside the top five. Beth Potter sits second in the standings after opening the season with victory in Samarkand and adding two silver medals, while Yokohama breakout star Tilda Månsson, currently fourth in the standings, will be looking to double her gold medal tally.

Also on the start list are Lisa Tertsch, the reigning world champion who claimed her first WTCS medal in Hamburg in 2022, and defending Hamburg champion Leonie Periault, who will look to repeat the victory that made her the first athlete to defeat Cassandre Beaugrand in a WTCS race since 2023. Laura Lindemann is another notable name, arriving with five medals on home soil.

Athletes missing from this weekend’s race include Georgia Taylor-Brown, Jolien Vermeylen, and Gwen Jorgensen. Alex Yee and Cassandre Beaugrand will also be absent as they prepare to race at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco.

World Para Series: This Sunday’s racing in Hamburg will also feature the fourth and final round of the 2026 World Para Series, marking the first time para athletes will compete on the Hamburg course.

Mixed Relay: The weekend will conclude with the Elite Mixed Relay, where the first Olympic qualification berth for LA2028 will be on the line. With the United States already qualified as the host nation, victory for the Americans would see the qualification place roll down to the next eligible nation. Germany enters as the reigning Olympic champions, while Australia returns as the defending Hamburg champions.
