Olympic redo in Boston – Alex Yee edges out a frustrated Hayden Wilde
Another exciting showdown between the world's top male short-course athletes - we recap the day in words and pictures
Photo by: Kevin MackinnonIt was the same result as we saw in Paris at the Olympics, but in a very different format and with very different dynamics. Once again Great Britain’s Alex Yee pulled ahead of New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde in the closing stages of the run, but this time it was in the first of five supertri League races we’ll see in 2024.
Instead of a classic Olympic distance race, the supertri Boston race featured three straight 300 m swim/ 8 km bike/ 1.6 km run efforts.
The fans in Boston were treated to quite a race as Wilde, racing for the Crown Racing team, and Yee, competing for Brownlee Racing, were pretty much neck and neck throughout the entire race. As the race hit the final leg they found themselves in a tough group of five that included France’s Vincent Luis and Dorian Coninx, along with Germany’s Tim Hellwig, who is still riding high after being part of the gold-medal mixed relay squad from Paris.
As he did in Paris, Wilde would push to the front during the final run leg. This time there was no fading due to the heat, though – he simply didn’t have an answer to Yee’s punishing kick to the line. After the race Wilde expressed frustration that none of the others in the lead group were willing to do any work at the front on the bike.
Behind the winning pair, Conninx would prove to be the fastest of the rest, rounding out the podium, with Hellwig taking fourth and Luis finishing fifth.
