Gomez and Carfrae headline Ironman Cairns race weekend

The 2018 Ironman Cairns event this weekend, will also be the 2018 Ironman Asia-Pacific Championships. Not only is there a full Ironman distance race, there is also a 70.3 race. Ironman Cairns, over the past seven years has become one a ‘must do’ on the Ironman circuit.

This race boasts one of the post beautiful bike courses in the world, hugging the coastline from Port Douglas to Cairns. Before taking on the scenic looped run course along the boardwalks, before finishing in the city centre.

Some big names will be going head to head at this Ironman event, as it is shaping up to be one of the most competitive fields in history. On the men’s side, all eyes will be on five time ITU World Champion, Xterra and Ironman 70.3 World Champion, Javier Gomez. He will be up against a deep field of proven winners, Terenzo Bozzone, Braden Currie, Tim O’Donnell, Tim Reed and Luke McKenzie.

On the women’s side, Ironman Cairns, marks the return to full Ironman racing for Mirinda Carfrae. Mirinda has had a great season thus far, completing both of her 70.3 races (Texas and Monterrey), finishing 2nd in both. A fierce competitor, Mirinda will be looking to mark her return to Ironman with a win in her home country of Australia.
