Everything you need to know about this weekend’s World Triathlon Championships
5,500 athletes are expected for this weekend's world championships which celebrate the best of age-group, elite and para triathlon racing

There are a reported 5,500 athletes heading to Torremolinos, Spain this weekend for the 2024 World Triathlon Age-Group Championships and Championship Finals.
We’ll have on-going coverage of the various races throughout the week, but here’s a look at the racing and how you can watch the races.

What:
The weekend’s racing will include age-group sprint- and standard-distance world championships, along with age-group mixed relay world championship events, elite, U23 and junior championship finals, along with the Para Triathlon Championships and mixed relay worlds as well.
Who:
According to World Triathlon, the event is expected to attract 4,000 age-group athletes from 79 nations, “making this one of the biggest World Triathlon Championships in history.” Add to that all the junior, U23, elite and para athletes, and you get to that 5,500 number.
We’ll have more on the elite racing later this week, but as is usual with the World Triathlon Championships, the overall title remains up for grabs depending on the results of this weekend’s racing. Olympic gold medalists Cassandre Beaugrand and Alex Yee might be the favourites going into the weekend’s racing, but they will have their work cut out for them to take the world titles.

Beaugrand is hoping to become only the second woman to win both the Olympic and world title in the same year (along with Bermuda’s Flora Duffy, who took gold in Tokyo). Others who remain in the mix for the world title include Olympic bronze medalist Beth Potter (GBR), Germany’s Lisa Tertsch, who has been on a tear of late, and Beaugrand’s countrywoman Emma Lombardi.

Yee has been the favourite heading into the last two world championship races, but tough days and huge wins by a pair of Frenchmen ended up costing him the world championship. Two years ago it was Leo Bergere who took the day and the world title. Last year Dorian Coninx managed the same feat. Yee will also have to contend with rival Hayden Wilde (NZL), too, if he hopes to achieve the Olympic/ World Championship double.
Where:
Needless to say, the folks in Torremolinos, “a vibrant coastal town in the heart of Andalucia, renowned for its stunning beaches, cultural heritage and lively atmosphere,” are thrilled with the influx of the athletes, family, friends and fans to the area for the racing.
“It is great news for triathlon that over 5,500 athletes will compete at the World Triathlon Championships, and with their supporters, we expect attendance to surpass 20,000 people from over 140 countries,” said Mararita Del Cid, the mayor of Torremolinos.
