It was certainly one of the biggest surprise victories we’ve seen in the sport for a long time – the impressive win at the Ironman North American Championship in Texas netted Mexico’s Tomas Rodriguez April’s PTO Athlete of the Month award.

Another “bike for show, run for dough” day at Ironman Texas

Rodriguez set a new run course record in Texas with his 2:34:14 marathon split, besting the man many consider to be the best marathon runner in the sport, Patrick Lange, by a minute. Rodriguez finished ahead of Youri Keulen and Ashleigh Gentle (the winners of the T100 Singapore race), and Taylor Knibb, who won Ironman 70.3 Oceanside.

A panel of triathlon media that includes Global Triathlon Network (GTN), Triathlete, Triathlon Magazine & Tri-Mag.de vote on their 1, 2, 3 from a four-athlete shortlist – awarding 3 points for #1, 2 pts for #2 and 1 pt for #3 – with triathlon fans also voting via the T100 social handles. Rodriguez received top marks from four of the five judges to reach 14 points; Keulen was second with 9 points, with Knibb third and Gentle fourth.
