Tomas Rodríguez runs away with April PTO Athlete of the Month award
Photo by: PTOIt was certainly one of the biggest surprise victories we’ve seen in the sport for a long time – the impressive win at the Ironman North American Championship in Texas netted Mexico’s Tomas Rodriguez April’s PTO Athlete of the Month award.
Rodriguez set a new run course record in Texas with his 2:34:14 marathon split, besting the man many consider to be the best marathon runner in the sport, Patrick Lange, by a minute. Rodriguez finished ahead of Youri Keulen and Ashleigh Gentle (the winners of the T100 Singapore race), and Taylor Knibb, who won Ironman 70.3 Oceanside.
A panel of triathlon media that includes Global Triathlon Network (GTN), Triathlete, Triathlon Magazine & Tri-Mag.de vote on their 1, 2, 3 from a four-athlete shortlist – awarding 3 points for #1, 2 pts for #2 and 1 pt for #3 – with triathlon fans also voting via the T100 social handles. Rodriguez received top marks from four of the five judges to reach 14 points; Keulen was second with 9 points, with Knibb third and Gentle fourth.
